Aluminum Keyboards
In 1808, Humphry Davy identified the existence of a metal base of alum, which he at first termed "alumium" and later "aluminium" or "aluminum". People have used alum since ancient times for dyeing, tanning and to stop bleeding. Aluminum was first isolated in 1825 by Hans Christian Ørsted (Oersted) who reported, “a lump of metal which in color and luster somewhat resembles tin.” Finally, in 1886 Charles Martin Hall and Paul Héroult independently invented the Hall-Héroult process, which inexpensively isolates aluminum metal from its oxide electrolytically.
Before the Hall-Héroult process was developed in the late 1880s, aluminium was exceedingly difficult to extract from its various ores. This made pure aluminium more valuable than gold. Bars of aluminium were exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of 1855. Napoleon III of France is reputed to have given a banquet where the most honoured guests were given aluminium utensils, while the others were forced to "make do" with mere gold.
